Over the last 5 to 10 years, the natural plant products industry has grown at a rate of 10 percent per annum. Nutraceuticals alone are generating an estimated US$60 billion per annum - US$ 50 million of which comes from Africa! The demand for organic and natural plant products is increasing, and herbal teas, essential oils, herbs, spices, phytomedicinals and phyto-cosmetics are finding their way onto many supermarket shelves. Despite existing reserves of wisdom on indigenous plants, natural plant products require extensive research. In order to promote the development of African agribusinesses and natural plant products, ASNAPP has created a broad resource base; composed of African and USA universities, public and private sector partners as well as agricultural organisations and governments. With these partners, ASNAPP has acquired an immense amount of resource material. Some of the main topics included in this material focuses on the development and marketing of herbal teas, spices, oils and phytomedicianals. There are also large information resources available on cultivation practices, sustainable harvesting practices as well as quality control and assurance standards. While providing an invaluable central resource database for facilitators and trainers, resource-limited farmers only benefit from this database, as this research gives them an edge in both the field and the market. |
